The Ahwahnee presents itself-se presente as a Grand Dame of a by-gone-desaparecido era. It hypes itself as a center of attentive-atento service, immaculate-impecable details, and goes so far as- así que se refiere to suggest-sugeriría that male guests wear- desgaste jackets or blazers to its dining room.
First, this is a Lodge, not a hotel. It is an historic structure, but it is by no means-de ninguna manera a five star facility and I would be hard-pressed to categorize it as four star as well.
There was an uncomfortable intensity about the staff from the moment we pulled up -nos detuvimos to the porte cochere. Rather than -En vez de lo que simply opening the car door, unloading our bags and directing us to the reception area, we were virtually ignored- nos estaban prácticamente ignorados by part of the valet/bell staff-botones and peppered with questions with implicit anticipations of tips all around-.todos los alrededores The banter-maña was neither-ni pleasant nor-ni professional. It was a staff that had disdain-desden for the guests and exposed their expectations for tips to the degree that it was more akin -parecía más to graft (abuse of position).
At reception, we were told-dijeron that our room was not ready AND that the king room we had booked and called ahead to confirm was not available. Instead-En cambio, they tried to pawn off -empeño a double room to us. We were told that if we wanted "special accommodations" (that being a BASIC king room) we should have called the Hotel directly - despite the fact that online booking was available, encouraged, and accepted-disponible, animaron, y aceptó. The front desk staff we dealt with- nos trató was dour and offered us nothing in the way of hotel orientation, premise map, or a map of the Valley indicating the position of the hotel to roads, buses, or trails-senderos. . NOTHING. I asked three times for this information in varying ways and finally had to point behind the counter at the stack of maps to ask for one. punto detrás del mostrador de la pila de mapas de pedir uno.
dour-stern 嚴格的,嚴厲的;嚴峻的;苛刻的 severo
obstinate 頑固的,固執的 obstinado
sullen 不高興的,繃著臉的;慍怒的 hosco, agrio
Upon check-in we were told that there would be no electricity- iban a estar sin electricidad for the next two days between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The woman asked if we had received that notification. We told her "no" and she said she "thought" it was sent to all guests. We told her that we received the room confirmation via email and that we provided two phone numbers on our reservation. She shrugged it off and said that the outage-interrupción would not affect us. That's a pretty big assumption and an arrogant one at that.
I warn away-avisar any disabled guests-los huspedes discapacidados from this hotel or those with mobility problems. The elevator was slow enough to be dismissed as a meaningful mode-medio of transportation. The "door close" button was ineffective-inficaz, it took forever to respond to calls, and it was out for an entire day due to emergency maintenance. This maintenance, when completed-cuando terminen, did nothing to perceivably improve the service.-no hizo nada para mejorar el servicios
We had room service trays-bandeja sit-sentarse outside two guestrooms on the floor in our wing=ala for two complete 24 hour cycles. We returned from a day trip to find no-niguno bellman-boton, valet, or other hotel employee at the front of the hotel. When we asked about this we were told that "everyone" is busy. (When we came out later they angled around for more tips for the service that they didn't even perform-ni siquierea tocan.)
The room itself was nothing special. In fact almost all the furnishing details in the hotel were fragments or remnants-fragmentos o restos from the hotel's earliest days. I understand the difference between a "lodge" and a "hotel", but this place was charging over $500 per night. As a paying guest, we had every reason to expect furniture and finishes-los muebles y termina apropos to that kind of rate. The rooms were equivalent-equivalente to a Marriott Courtyard with the exception being the attempt to emulate Native American patterns. It looked cheap-Se veía barato, but I will say-yo diría the beds were comfortable and the grounds quiet at night-el entorno tranquilo por la noche.
Following-Siguiendo the advice of every tour- excursiónbook in existence, we took our breakfasts at the Ahwahnee Dining Room. Luckily, breakfast was included in our room rate. My advice to those reading about the great breakfasts at the Ahwahnee is to expect a grand room and a basic breakfast buffet that has no "wow" factor. It's a typical breakfast buffet you can find at any-cualquier - three star limited service hotels (think Hampton Inn, Marriott Courtyard).
Dinner at the Ahwahnee was a nice affair, although the quality and inventiveness of the meals nowhere matched-nada ocurrió the $40 - $50 entree pricing. The one thing that the dining room did have was excellent and attentive service. In fact, I'd venture-yo aventurarte to say that the Ahwahnee is ALL about the dining room. The dining room was fully staffed. The staff well-trained and managed-bien entrenado y las arreglé, and the hospitality to guests was superb-espléndido. The service in the dining room served to amplify how poor the service was elsewhere in the Hotel. Regardless-Independientemente,a pesar de todo, de todos modos, we declined to dine at the hotel again and, instead, dined at the much friendlier Mountainview restaurant to the Yosemite Lodge, where the food was excellent, the dining room cozy, the service superb-excepcional and the prices reasonable.
One morning we went to buy the newspaper at the sundry store. The door was open and we walked in. Three employees were in the store. We had two dollars out for the paper. They told us they were closed. We offered to leave the money on an honor system and we were told they didn't know how much the paper cost (despite the price being printed). We asked them to charge it to our room. They said "no". We offered to leave three dollars which would surely cover the price. We were told "no". This isn't just one befuddled employee. It is THREE employees with neither a clue nor an inkling of the most basic tenets of the hospitality industry.
The biggest issue I had with the hotel was the exorbitant-desorbitados rates. This hotel would be reasonable priced at $200 a night. It is absolutely NOT worth the rates being asked-Es absolutamente NO vale la pena el precio que piden and I dare(atraverse) say that-me atrevéis decir we found friendly staff while we were wandering through Curry Village (the tent camp). I have stayed in a number of national Park lodging accommodations. The Ahwahnee doesn't deliver and, based on the expectations that THEY themselves set, was the most disappointing National Park lodging I have experienced.
