Spenard Roadhouse: Restaurant Reviews

I was up from California on business, and was looking for more something other than fried fish and steaks. Someone suggested the Spenard Roadhouse for having a varied and unique menu. The decor is awesome, the service was excellent, and the menu was as promised. I ordered the grilled salmon, which was delicious, but was more pleased with the cous cous on the side, which was so rich it was more like risotto....they should make that a stand-alone entree. This place has a great variety of foods, from healthy to old fashioned comfort food!

Spenard Roadhouse opened in February 2009 and has pretty much scored success on all fronts. We were expecting great food and solid service from the collaboration of the people who brought Sack's Cafe and Snow City Cafe to the ANC dining scene - they delivered!

Glacier Brewhouse: Restaurant Reviews

I have been to Alaska 3 times and eaten here each time. The food is always good, but they are always on a wait. If you don't mind the wait, no views and a crowd, you will eventually enjoy the food and the microbrewed beer. We were told about this little hot spot by a friend. Light wooden rafters on the ceiling give the large dinning room a warm apeal, while the large stone fireplace makes it inviting. The menu was to inviting. Fresh sandwiches, meat, fish, pasta, and pizzas all called out to us and we flippled through the never ending pages. We couldn't resist. We ended up ordering two and sharing. Both were just as good as our main meals had been. When we were done we expected to pay an arm and a leg yet we didn't. Overall we were very happy we tried it because we would return many many more times always leaving satisfied. Expect a good wait at the peak times, but it is well worth it!

The atmosphere is great though. It's pretty laid back, but classy. It's also conveniently located in downtown. While visiting Anchorage had lunch at the Glacier Brewhouse. I had the Seafood Chowder as an appetizer. The staff seated us right next to a roaring fire set among iron antlers. The meals were outstanding, on par with any you would find in a top restaurant here in DC. The deserts were inventive and decadent. The whole experience was a cross between fine dining and casual in an Alaskan atmosphere. The restaurant serves up good food. It is a little too commercial for me. The price of the food will make your jaw drop. I don't think the food is good enough to warrant such prices, but the restaurant wasn't made for the locals. It caters to the masses that come off the cruise ships in the summer. The place is packed from 5pm onward to closing.

Service was friendly but not organized as we were left without enough place settings, no waters, got order mixed up. Beers are good. Herb crusted halibut and halibut fish n chips are always popular. The staff expects that anyone coming in during the summer is right off the cruise ship. Mom ordered a Sesame Chicken Salad and Seafood Chowder. The chowder was exceptional, the salad mediocre.Very good food, quality in-house brewed beers.

I had this amazing crusted halibut that was totally mouthwatering and light enough to leave me room for a sliky chocolate delight for dessert. With the competition from other brew-pubs within blocks, Glacier still seems to pack them in, even at premium prices.

We were told this is the place to eat in Anchorage. We could not agree more! We did have reservations, but arrived a little early, so we decided to sit at the bar until our table was ready. We ended up staying and eating in the bar area, which was just as nice as the rest of the restaurant. I ordered the herb crusted halibut, which was very yummy! My husband treated himself to the Alaskan king crab legs and they were SOOooooOO good!! The prices are expensive, but just keep that in mind when you go. We felt it was worth it to have a nice meal in a nice atmosphere and great beer. This place is awesome! The beer at the brewhouse was pretty standard fare, not bad by any means but just good. When in town, carve out some time and stop by for the fish, have a beer while your at it, you won't regret it.
